The Ribes nigrum is a compact, mounding, deciduous shrub that is native to Northern Europe and West China. The Ribes nigrum grows 3 to 4 feet tall and is a highly aromatic plant. It is easily distinguished at all seasons by (1) the strong scent of its buds and (2) its multilobed leaves. It has greenish-yellow flowers that bloom in spring, followed by the ripening of clusters of black currants (June July) which can be eaten ripe off the shrub or used to make jams, jellies, and pies.

Phytochemical Constituents:

Contains an omega-6 fatty acid called gamma linoleic acid (GLA). The claim is that gamma-linoleic acid works by increasing the body's production of prostaglandin E-1 or by correcting a deficiency of gamma-linoleic acid. Prostaglandin E-1 helps to increase blood flow, decrease blood clotting, and reduce inflammation. Rich in both gamma-linoleic (18:3n-6) and alpha-linoleic (18:3n-3) acids, has been shown to modulate membrane lipid composition and eicosanoid production. BCSO has a moderate immune-enhancing effect attributable to its ability to reduce prostaglandin E-2 production.

The blackcurrant buds in Europe contain more than 20 times the amount of Vitamin C (1025mg/100g), 1.5 times that of calcium, two times as much magnesium and zinc, and 1.5 times that of Potassium than the blackcurrant produced in the USA (published by the U.S. Department of Agriculture.) Cassis blackcurrant in New Zealand contains as much as 2780 mg of anthocyanin and 5270 mg of the other phenolic acid. Also, the comparison of the BRIX level between American blackcurrant (BRIX 12) and NZ blackcurrant (BRIX 18) indicates a big difference in the total solids, which influence the amount of phytonutrients and other flavonoid content.

Black currants are known for their "antioxidative effects” and are comparable to "cherries and red grapes” according to a few examples from the literature listed below.
